The Benefits of Training – By Sonja Kiernan

A high and competent level of athletic ability is required in junior and adolescent athletes to enable them to enhance their sporting ability. This applies to every young athlete who participates in any sport.

ProActive's program provides training for athletes of ALL abilities. The training program has proven to be very successful and every athlete who has participated has improved.

A properly developed and prepared athlete has a better chance to achieve their goals and a higher rate of these athletes continue their participation in sport through to adulthood. This also promotes good health and well being for your children now but also setting a good pattern for their future.

Growth and development in young athletes is of the utmost importance. The physical and physiological development of children is to be held in very high regard when training junior athletes. All training has to be safe yet effective. Young athletes should be trained according to age, maturity and ability – not just ability.

Improved performance through fitness, strength, flexibility and technique will encourage and promote self-confidence and self esteem for athletes of all abilities, hence their continued development and participation in sport.

Not all athletes will be world, state or club champions however another important element that does come from training is commitment. To train for your sport is no different than doing homework for school. If you don’t do your homework you have a greater chance of failing than improving – by training you have a better chance of improving your performance and skill level.

Overall the desired outcomes of the program are:

- Improved Performance not only in Athletics but other Sports

- The Athletes to learn, have FUN and socialize with other Athletes

- Continuity in Training

- Good Health and Wellbeing

- Commitment to Training

- Future Participation in Sport

- Promote and Encourage Self-Esteem and Self Confidence

I look forward to seeing all the athletes who have participated in Coburg Centre Training for season 2009/2010 and I hope to see more new faces in the future.

Centre Training is every Wednesday at 6.00pm – 7.00pm and is free of charge to all Coburg Little Athletics Centre Athletes.

Training and Coaching

TRAINING AND COACHING

Many athletes pick up bad habits as youngsters, and go through their athletics career with poor techniques. If athletes are going to achieve their best, it is essential they learn the skills correctly from the start, and Coburg athletes have the chance to do this at regular training nights. Some clubs have their own coaching or training sessions, but we also do it as a Centre. Training is held on a Wednesday evening commencing at 6.00pm. Athletes should arrive at least 15 minutes beforehand and warm up before the session commences.

Also, Coburg Harriers train at the track on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and welcome junior athletes. Contact Jeremy Grey for more detail on 0413 612 078 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
